Liposuction 101Video Description:For the past decade, liposuction has been the most popular cosmetic surgery worldwide. So what's the skinny on liposuction? Transcript:If you are considerering having liposuction to reshape your body, this video is a great place to start. Wendy Lewis, an international beauty consultant and expert, and author of America's Cosmetic Doctors, is here explain what liposuction can and cannot do for you.  For the past decade, liposuction has been the most popular cosmetic surgical procedure worldwide, and for obvious reasons. While dieting reduces your weight and size all over, liposuction removes particular fat cells, and can help you change specific flaws in your figure. Liposuction is a safe and effective way to remove bulges from almost any area of the body.  The areas where women see the most immediate impact from liposuction are the abdomen, thighs, hips, flanks and knees. If you are very overweight, you may have to undergo these procedures in stages. The factor that limits what you can achieve with liposuction is your skin tone. The more elastic your skin, the better result you can get. If you have flabby skin due to pregnancies, aging, or weight fluctuations, liposuction may not be right for you. If you need excess skin removed, a tummy tuck, body lift, or other incisional surgery may be recommended.  When you undergo liposuction, tiny incisions are made in the targeted area, and a wetting solution is infused to provide anesthesia, reduce bleeding and improve fat extraction. The surgeon will use hollow, thin, tube-like instruments with holes at one end called cannula to trap the fat.  These cannula are inserted under the skin and moved in a back and forth fashion within the fat, pulling it aside while protecting the vessels and nerves. Your fat is suctioned out through holes at the tip of the cannula.  In most cases, surgery can be performed in your surgeon’s office, under local anesthetic, in one to three hours. A compression garment is usually worn for several weeks after liposuction to reduce swelling and maximize skin contraction.  However, most people can return to work or normal activities in as little as one week.  Liposuction is considered a very safe procedure, and risks are usually related to the expertise of the surgeon and anesthesiologist. Specific risks include rare complications like pulmonary edema, when fluid collects in the lungs, and fat embolus where a bit of fat travels into the bloodstream. For best results, liposuction surgery should be performed by a board-certified plastic surgeon or dermatologic surgeon. You should consult with two or more doctors to review your options.  Although liposuction can effectively reshape your contours and reduce fat deposits, it isn’t a substitute for healthy diet and exercise. If you keep your weight stable, results are permanent. If you gain weight after liposuction, it will tend to show up in the areas that were not suctioned.  For more information, see a plastic surgeon in your area.  For more on what to expect during liposuction, check the other resources on our site.
