“Vicoprofen, the brand name for the compound that includes the narcotic hydrocodone and ibuprofen, was approved by the FDA in 1997.” Hydrocodone is a prescription narcotic that can be combined with ibuprofen, the active ingredient in Advil, to form a potent pain-killer. This compound is available as a generic drug and under the brand name Vicoprofen.  When hydrocodone enters the central nervous system, it binds to opioid receptors in the brain and along the spinal cord. This relieves discomfort by blocking out the body’s natural response to pain. Although hydrocodone is an “antitussin,” or cough suppressant, it is prescribed almost exclusively to treat pain. When ibuprofen and hydrocodone are combined, the compound treats mild to moderate pain better than either medication does alone.  The hydrocodone and ibuprofen compound is usually prepared in a tablet of seven point five milligrams of hydrocodone and two-hundred milligrams of ibuprofen.  The hydrocodone and ibuprofen compound should be taken with a full glass of water or with food. Because hydrocodone can be addictive, never take more medication than has been prescribed for you. Commonly reported side effects of hydrocodone with ibuprofen include constipation, nausea and drowsiness, but ask your doctor for a complete list. Also, tell your physician immediately if you experience black or bloody stools, weak breathing, a change in your urine, or any other significant changes. To avoid an overdose of this medication, the compound should not be taken with other drugs that contain ibuprofen. Ask your doctor for a full list of medications and conditions that should not be combined with this compound.  Taken as recommended, Vicoprofen can often help people cope with pain. However, hydrocodone must always be used under the direct care of a physician.  Please ask for and review all of the information provided by your doctor before taking hydrocodone with ibuprofen.  “The information in this video is intended to supplement, not substitute for, the expertise of your physician.  Always consult your doctor before using this drug.”
