Metoprolol tartrate is a prescription medication which is available both as a generic drug and under the brand name Lopressor. This medication belongs to a class of drugs known as beta blockers. Metoprolol works by blocking the effects of the hormone epinephrine, which is more commonly known as adrenaline. As a result, the heart beats more slowly and less forcefully, and blood pressure is reduced. Metoprolol is most commonly used to treat high blood pressure, but can also be prescribed for people with angina, or chest pain, and people who have suffered from a heart attack. Lopressor is available in tablets of 25, 50, and 100 milligrams. An intravenous solution is also available. Metoprolol should be taken as prescribed with food or immediately after eating. For best results, this medication should be combined with a low-cholesterol diet and a healthy exercise plan. The most commonly reported side effects of metoprolol include dizziness, depression, and drowsiness, but please ask your doctor for a complete list. Also, tell your doctor IMMEDIATELY if you experience a very slow heartbeat, blue or yellowish discoloration to the skin, or any other significant changes.Metoprolol should be used with caution in people with slow heart-beats, congestive heart failure, or breathing-difficulties like asthma. Ask your doctor for a full list of medications and conditions that should not be combined with metoprolol. Lopressor is commonly prescribed to treat high blood pressure. However, this medication must always be used under the direct care of a physician. Please ask for and review all of the patient information provided by your doctor before taking metoprolol.
