What that tongue is actually doing is ridding the wound of dead tissue. A dog’s mouth is besieged by its own legions of germs, roughly as huge in population as those living in the human mouth. And, as we all know, dogs aren't particularly fussy about where they put their tongues. "A dog's mouth contains a lot of bacteria," confirms veterinarian Dr. Gary "Ask the Vet" Clemons. "Remember, a dog's tongue is not only his wash cloth but also his toilet paper."
