Video Description:Sunshine is good for you! Really. Vitamin D is crucial, and we don't get enough from the fortified foods that have it. Find out why basking in the sun for a few minutes a day is GREAT for you!Transcript:Vitamin D, often referred to as the "sunshine” vitamin—since sunlight is the best source—is key to sustaining long-term health. Prevailing wisdom has been that we get sufficient amounts of Vitamin D from our everyday exposure to sun, but recent research has found that this is NOT the case. Basically, your body cannot make Vitamin D, but you CAN get it from food and sunlight. Unfortunately, you cannot rely on diet alone to supply enough vitamin D. Exposure to sunlight is the key to producing ample amounts of this essential vitamin. But don’t take this as license to bake yourself to a crisp in the sun. Generally, your body will produce adequate amounts of vitamin D with 20-30 minutes of sun exposure on your hands, arms and face everyday—but here’s the rub, sunscreen dramatically inhibits UV ray penetration, which is necessary for Vitamin D production, so go out with some of your skin sunscreen-free, and then apply after 20–30 minutes have passed.Category:Health Myths/The Human BodyTags:Health Myth, Vitamin D, Vitamin D Sources, Vitamin D Benefits, Vitamin D Sunlight, Sun, Sunlight, Sun Exposure
