Acai Berry Detox Diet
You Just Watched:
Brazilians have been eating acai berries for years, but they only recently showed up in American products like the 48-hour Acai Berry Detox, a liquid formula that claims to detoxify your digestive system and boost metabolism. Here's the real deal.

The acai berry has been hailed as the newest superfood with health benefits ranging from weight loss and increased energy to mental clarity and a flawless complexion. The dark purple berries grow in the Amazon rain forest and are packed with fiber, essential fats, and substances called anthocyanins and flavanoids. These substances act as antioxidants, which are known for their anti-aging powers and their role in defending the body against chronic diseases. Although natives of Brazil have been consuming acai berries for many years, they were only recently introduced to the American supplement market. In fact, 53 new food and drink products containing the Brazilian berries were introduced in the United States in 2008 alone. Total sales of all things acai surged to $104 million - that's more than DOUBLE the 2007 figure. One such product is the 48-hour acai berry detox, a liquid formula that claims to detoxify your digestive system and boost metabolism. Unlike many diet supplements, 48-Hour Acai Berry Detox doesn't claim to control hunger, but it's supposed to reduce bloating, minimize water weight, and flush unwanted waste and toxins from the body, making it easier to shed excess body fat. To take this product, you simply combine four ounces of the liquid concentrate with four to eight ounces of water. It should be consumed four times each day between meals. You need to drink plenty of water when using this liquid formula. You're also encouraged to eat a lot of healthy grains, vegetables, and fruits. The 48 hour acai berry detox is appealing for many reasons: It's easy to buy online for about $15, it's mixed with water, which is something most people need more of, and there's no fat at all. Plus, it has the word "acai" in its name - the miracle berry known for its high antioxidant content. For this reason most people automatically assume all things acai are incredibly good for you. But the truth is that there's no scientific evidence that this product actually assists with real weight loss. While this diet may help relieve constipation, research truly supports eating a diet rich in ALL antioxidants from a variety of fruits and vegetables. For example, red grapes - a glass of red wine - and blueberries are all great sources of antioxidants. The lesson to take away from this and all other seemingly healthy products is to look at the big picture. Don't just focus on one isolated component of your diet like eating acai berry extract. And remember that the calorie content of acai berry products varies A LOT. An 8-ounce cup of acai berry juice is around 80-120 calories, while many commercial smoothies and bars can START at 300 calories. If you're watching your waistline, be sure to consume them in SUBSTITUTION and not in ADDITION to a meal! And avoid this diet altogether if you have a hypersensitivity to berries. "The Master Cleanse," also known as "the lemonade diet" or "maple syrup diet", was first introduced by nutritionist Stanley Burroughs in his book The Master Cleanser in 1976. Thirty years later, famous singer and actress Beyonce Knowles appeared on The Oprah Winfrey Show saying that she turned to the Master Cleanse Diet to help her drop 20 pounds in less than 2 weeks for her role in the movie Dream Girls. And so like most things that make their way onto Oprah's set, the Master Cleanse Diet was an overnight sensation. Though Beyonce admits that she broke the rules and also ate vegetables during her 14-day detox, the Master Cleanse is traditionally a liquid diet of water, lemon or lime juice, maple syrup, and cayenne pepper. Followers drink from six to 12 glasses of the concoction each day for 10 days, combined with a glass of salt water in the morning and a laxative tea in the evening. All solid food is off limits. The diet was originally intended to treat ulcers and detoxify the body, but more recently followers are drawn to the Lemonade Diet for its promise of maximum weight loss in minimum time. So does the plan actually work? Technically yes, if your goal is simply to see a lower number on the scale. The diet is only 600 to 1200 calories per day -- or about 100 calories per glass. Remember, for weight maintenance, the average male requires 1900-2500 calories per day and the average female requires 1600 -2000 calories per day. To lose weight men should aim for 1600-1900 calories per day and females should aim for 1200-1500 calories per day. No one should dip below 1200 calories per day for weight loss without professional supervision, which is one reason why the Master Cleanse may be dangerous. Essentially, this regimen is a fast and puts the body into a state of starvation. During starvation your fat cells are burned for energy, but your body also breaks down muscle to provide enough fuel to vital organs such as the brain and heart. Starvation also causes your body to slow down how quickly it burns calories to conserve as much energy as possible. For this reason, any weight that you do lose on the Master Cleanse will be difficult to maintain once you return to a normal diet. More importantly, starving your body of vital nutrients for a prolonged period can wreak havoc on your system. Risks include frequent liquid bowel movements, vitamin deficiency, muscle breakdown, weakened immune system, hair loss, pallid complexion and even brain damage. The bottom line is that there are definitely much safer and more sustainable ways to lose weight that do not incur long-term health risks. As popular as the Martha’s Vineyard detox diet is becoming, it cannot be termed a long term solution for weight loss. Get to know more from this video.

Lose 21 pounds in 21 days! That's the big promise of The Martha's Vineyard Diet Detox. It's also the title of the book explaining exactly how the plan works, so it's not surprising that it sent swarms of people flocking to their local bookstore. The Martha's Vineyard Diet claims to cleanse the digestive system, boost immunity, reduce cellulite and enhance mental clarity. According to the plan's creator, Roni DeLuz, the significant weight loss that occurs on the program is just an added bonus. The detox diet is centered on drinking juices and consuming soups from whole foods and vegetables. There are no foods that require you to chew because the claim of the Martha's Vineyard Detox is that it rests the digestive track, which begins working when you chew food and release chemicals from the salivary glands. However, the truth is, even when you slurp your calories, your digestive tract is always working. People on the plan are instructed to buy several supplements from the diet's website, including an antioxidant berry mix, green drink, food enzymes, and inner cleansing products for the colon and liver. Colonics, coffee enemas, saunas and massages are recommended to help eliminate toxins. The Martha's Vineyard diet may be beneficial for people trying to make a major lifestyle modification, as the dramatic change in routine can help break unhealthy habits and increase awareness about the quality of food you're eating. Unlike most detox diets, the Martha's Vineyard plan has a little flexibility. There is a 2-day weekend program and a 7-day tune-up program for those not ready to take on the entire 21-day event. That's especially helpful since it's impossible to eat out when you're following the program, so unless you bring your own liquid concoctions, it may put a damper on your social life. It's also worth pointing out that the plan only provides 20 grams of protein per day, which is well below recommended daily intakes and it also lack essential fats and fiber. Plus, the recommendation of colonics and coffee enimas has not been scientifically proven to promote weight loss. The bottom line message - the Martha's Vineyard Diet makes a few good recommendations like eating more fresh fruits and vegetables, but since most people would find it difficult to eat nothing but juices, soups, and supplements, it's not likely to be a long-term solution. There are a lot of reasons why a diet may not work. But one of the most common reasons a diet fails is that it's too hard to stick with the plan long enough to see the results you want. But what if you only had to commit for 3 days? That's all the 3-day fruit flush detox requires. The plan was created by Jay Robb, a former bodybuilder and clinical nutritionist with more than 30 years of experience, and it promises to help break addictions to food. You can lose up to 9 pounds in just 3 days on the Fruit Flush Diet. So how does it work? The key ingredient is - not surprisingly - fruit. According to the diet's creator, a person's body can be cleansed of toxins by eating the right combination of natural foods. For 3 days, the fruit flush plan lays out a specific combination of fruits and other natural foods to eat. You aren't allowed to add any extras to the list provided, so you allow the body to be cleansed by foods that are naturally high in water, fiber, and natural plant-based medicines. The 3-day detox consists of a pre-flush day, followed by 2 days of fruit flushing. On day one, followers are allowed protein shakes, water, vegetables, and a small portion of lean protein in addition to fruit. Day 2 and 3 of the detox diet consist of a piece of fresh fruit every 2 hours followed by a large salad in the evening. For dessert you can sip on a protein shake made of 12 ounces of water and 5 tablespoons of egg whites or whey protein powder. The idea behind this diet is that toxins are flushed out of the body along with sodium, which helps to reduce water retention. Though many holistic doctors advocate the health benefits of occasionally flushing out the internal system, there's no scientific proof that detox programs are an effective way to lose weight and keep it off for good. Plus, your body is already equipped with natural detox organs - your liver and kidneys. If you decide to try this or any detox plan, you'll likely see a lower number on the scale simply because you're taking in a very small amount of calories each day. While this diet INCLUDES hydrating fruIts and vegetables, it also EXCLUDES entire food groups that deliver other essential nutrients. To maintain weight loss, you're better off finding a diet and exercise routine that you can stick to. And remember: Before beginning any diet plan, it's always best to check with your doctor to ensure it's safe for you to follow based on your unique medical history.More »

A good diet not only helps you lose weight and look great, but it also makes you feel your best. A GREAT diet does all that AND saves the planet in the process. That's the claim of Alicia Silverstone's Vegan Detox plan called The Kind Diet. Following The Kind Diet allows you to take steps to reduce your impact on the planet and preserve our precious resources. At the same time, you'll lose weight, your skin will glow, you'll have tons of energy and you will become more sensitive to all the important things in life like love, nature and your deepest truest self, according to Silverstone. In other words, this is one POWERFUL detox diet. Let's take a closer look at how the plan works. First, the overarching theme of this vegan diet is to choose KIND over "NASTY" foods, which are defined as meat, dairy, white sugar and processed foods. Once you have a grasp on kind versus nasty foods, it's time to move on to part 2 of the plan. Part 2 of The Kind Diet outlines 3 paths to becoming a vegan: Flirts, Vegans and Superheros. According to Silverstone, flirting is the first step to begin exploring a plant-based diet. The flirting process lasts a few weeks and includes eating at local vegetarian restaurants, shopping at the nearest health food store, buying organic brown rice and unrefined sea salt, taking a yoga class and finally going 4 weeks without beef, chicken or pork. When you're finished flirting, you move on to the vegan phase. To begin the vegan plan, Silverstone suggests getting rid of any meat or dairy products in your home and focusing on building your meals using one quarter grains, one quarter protein and one half vegetables, but insists that having one serving of protein a day is enough. The third and final phase, Superheroes, is more restrictive than even Alicia Silverstone can follow every day. Superheroes avoid all processed foods, phase out soy milk and limit fruit, herbs, spices, nuts, nightshade vegetables such as potatoes, tomatoes and eggplant and "strong" sweeteners like maple syrup and salt. So does The Kind Diet really live up to its big claims? Research shows that a plant-based diet can be safe and may effectively lower rates of obesity, diabetes, heart disease and even some cancers. Following a plant-based diet may also decrease demand for certain natural resources, reducing your carbon footprint. But a few of Silverstone's claims - like the Kind Diet's ability to clear up acne -- don't have any real scientific support. It's also important to remember that any good weight loss plan should also encourage adequate physical activity. The Grapefruit Diet has been around for years, but its premise hasn't changed. Grapefruit contains plant compounds that are believed to balance levels of the hormone insulin, thereby kick-starting metabolism. Perhaps the best part about the Grapefruit Diet is its length: Twelve days of dieting and you're done! This means that the diet is best for people wishing to lose a little weight in a short time-like those red carpet regulars! The Grapefruit Diet involves, of course, eating grapefruit at every meal. It also stresses lots of black coffee-which is said to help speed metabolism-and minimal calories. Only 800 calories to be exact, which is about half of what a sedentary 130 pound woman needs each day! So while dieting like a Floridian might leave you hungry, it may also leave you up to 12 pounds lighter!More »

The Sonoma Diet, created by Dr. Connie Gutterson, focuses on savoring all kinds of wholesome foods while emphasizing portion control. The diet also sets a strict daily caloric limit. Still, this is not your ordinary plan. Inspired by the fresh-tasting foods of California's wine country, the diet is about slowly savoring reasonable portions. The Sonoma Diet recommends using a 7" to 9" plate, which is considerably smaller than the standard 12" one. Most of the diet's meals are built around ten "super foods," which are designed to pack a powerful nutritional punch. The Sonoma super foods include almonds, whole grains, olive oil, bell peppers, tomatoes, broccoli, grapes, spinach, strawberries, and blueberries. After a few days, wine, which is touted for its heart-healthy properties, is also encouraged. So drink up! By savoring and sipping, the Sonoma Diet is meant to be a forever-routine that, in turn, promises lifelong results.More »

When Dr. Dean Ornish created the Life Choice Diet, he wanted a good-for-YOU weight loss method that would be easy to follow: No calorie counting! Although the Life Choice Diet was originally created to lower high cholesterol and to encourage heart health, it quickly became popular as a weight loss tool. The diet works like this: consume less than 10 percent of your calories from fat. To meet this goal, the Life Choice Diet cuts out all processed foods, refined sugars, and most animal products. In addition, the diet even discourages the use of traditionally "healthy" fats like olive oil and nuts. You can, however, consume unlimited amounts of fruits, veggies, and beans whenever you're hungry. With its promise of preventing heart disease and its weight loss results, The Life Choice Diet may bring out the vegetarian in you!More »

The Macrobiotic Diet focuses on consuming wholesome foods in natural ways. The diet combines foods based on the Japanese principles of balance between yin and yang energy. Since Macrobiotic Dieters believe that every food has energy, each meal contains foods that are thought to be evenly balanced between yin and yang. A guide will help you learn which foods to consume, but a good Macrobiotic meal contains roughly 60 percent whole grains, 30 percent vegetables, and small portions of fish and fruit. The Macrobiotic Diet recommends avoiding yang foods, such as animal products, and yin foods, like chocolate. While the plan sounds challenging, the promise of overall well-being has called many followers, including John Lennon and Yoko Ono. The Raw Foods Diet is based on the idea that raw foods contain enzymes which help the body digest and absorb nutrients. Proponents of the diet believe that heating food above 116 degrees destroys these vital enzymes. Of course, this means that all animal products are no-nos on the Raw Foods Diet. In addition, anything "man-made" or "pre-packaged" is off-limits. Fresh fruits and vegetables, nuts and seeds, grains, and purified water are all okay. The Raw Foods Diet encourages weight loss, but it is also touted for increasing energy, but reducing the risk of heart disease. The Cheater's Diet was developed by Dr. Paul Rivas based on the theory that a too-strict diet causes the metabolism to slow down, hindering weight loss. Occasional indulgences, however, prevent this. If you're on the Cheater's Diet, you're expected to eat a healthy, Mediterranean-style diet Monday through Friday. This involves filling your plate half full with fruits or veggies, full of lean protein, and full of whole grains. Then, from 9am on Saturday to 9pm on Sunday, cheating is not just allowed-it's required! Cheater's Dieters get to enjoy foods like chocolate, pizza, and cinnamon buns. The only thing that's not allowed is binging. That means, if you really can't eat just one Lays potato chip, that's not a good cheat food for you! The Cheater's Diet proves to cheaters everywhere that you can have your cake and eat it too-and lose weight to boot!More »

Thirty minutes isn't that long-it's less than a class or an episode of The Office. It's also all the time you need to lose weight. If you're ready to change your body for the better, you can start with this simple step: commit to a daily thirty minute workout. When weight loss is your goal, spend your half hour engaging in aerobic exercise. Aerobic means "with oxygen," and refers to an exercise that can be maintained over a period of 20 minutes or more. While exercising aerobically, you should be able to carry on a brief conversation without gasping. Some of these aerobic exercises include brisk walking, jogging and cross-country skiing. Group exercise can also be aerobic, like spinning, kickboxing and step-classes. During aerobic exercises like these, the body takes glucose that it has created from food and uses it for energy. Once you use up your supply of glucose, your body uses its stored fat for the energy it needs instead. This is why daily aerobic activity leads to weight loss. Of course, this kind of exercise has a host of other benefits, like reducing your risk of heart disease and stroke, and even improving your mood. Commit to doing aerobic exercise daily, and you'll definitely start seeing results within three to four weeks.More »

You're doing everything you can to lose weight, and yet you're stuck in a big, dieting rut. What's sabotaging your weight loss? Eating healthy foods, cutting back on alcohol, and exercising daily are all tried and true ways to lose weight. But sometimes, these smart strategies can be undercut by other, seemingly healthy habits. One such habit is drinking diet soft drinks regularly. You may think Diet Coke is fine because it contains zero calories. But there is a correlation between drinking diet soda and being overweight. The cause for the connection is not definitively known, but it may be due in part to the fact that diet soda's artificial sweetener appears to actually slow metabolism. But it may also be because a person drinking diet soda may mistakenly think that they can now indulge in junk food because they are "saving" calories by not drinking full-sugar soda.Another surprising weight loss trap is consuming only skim and low-fat dairy products. New research suggests that omitting full fat dairy from your diet also eliminates key nutrients in milk, which are known to optimize the body's ability to burn fat. You might also want to look at the times of day when you eat. Eating between 8PM and 4AM can be problematic, both because it usually leads to a higher daily caloric intake and because the body's metabolism can be slower during the night. One last tip that can help college students lose weight is this:Exercise done in the morning, before eating, burns fat 300% more efficiently than after food intake! This is due to your body using your stores of fat as fuel, rather than the meal you most recently ate. With these strategies, you'll likely see the positive results faster than ever before!More »
